SYNOPSIS:[email protected] is a scientific experiment that uses a wide variety of computers, including general purpose and specialized computers, in the "Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence" (SETI). Anyone participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data. Having an interest of theoretical physics, and the everlasting hope for finding life in space, it was a natural choice for me to donate my spare computing power, albeit not having much FLOPS at my disposal, to a SETI related project. [email protected] established by University of California, Berkeley was the top pick because of its history, and affiliations. [email protected] focuses on Radio SETI, a subset of SETI research that utilizes radio telescopes to listen for narrow-bandwidth signals from space. Since narrow-bandwidth signals are not known to occur naturally, a detection would provide evidence of extraterrestrial technology.
